Brian
Houser was assisted by Jon Beard, Doug Gouzie, Melvin Johnson, Jane St.
John plus Stevi Craft and Kara Warren of the Springfield parks department
in the all-day repair of the gate in Ritter Cave of Greene County.
The door and lock box were rebuilt, a missing stiffener was added and
measures were taken to prevent vandals from digging under the gate. The
gate had originally been installed in 1997 under the guidance of MDC
agents Ken Lister and Mark McGimpsey but had been vandalized repeatedly
since. Photo is of Brian Houser welding. Photo by Jon Beard. |

SPG continued the Fisher Cave (Franklin County) restoration project as part of the 50th Anniversary weekend of the MSS. While Charity, Jason and Max worked on cleaning and tagging broken speleothems and restoring a section of flowstone and the floor of the Ballroom, Bonnie and Jon reattached seven stalagmites using 2-part epoxy. Also, one drapery was reattached by Jason and Jon. Michael led two MSS groups through the cave, explaining in detail the restoration work being conducted by SPG members. Photo is Bonnie Curnock (right) and Jon Beard (left) on ledge in the Ballroom of Fisher Cave. After having reattached the stalagmite using epoxy, they're color matching with clay and water to hide the brake lines, using gloved fingers. Photo by Charity Gramm. |
