reattached four stalagmites in restoration work in Bluff Cave of
Shannon County. One of them was naturally leaning at a 45-degree angle
and required a drilled pin for added support. Sporadic restoration work
is being conducted in this cave located on the Riverways now that it is
protected by a gate to keep out vandals. Hundreds of vandalized
speleothems remain in need of repair. Image of vandalized speleothems by Jon Beard |

September 24th—Roy
Gold returned to Burgard Cave (Wright Co), accompanied by Bob
Taylor and Jon Beard. The three photographed much of the first half of
the 1090-foot cave. The first part of the cave is mazy and
joint-determined. The main passage was more sinuous with diminishing
height. The cave is formed just under the Northview shale-Compton
limestone contact. A couple of breakout domes migrate into the shale,
which is a blocky siltstone in this locale. Image is Bob Taylor, by Roy Gold. |

Jeff Young, Sarah Young, Charley Young, Max White, Nathan Knight and Michael Carter took a leisurely trip in Smittle Cave (Wright Co), taking several multi-flash photos of the Main Passage to the Jumping Off Place (past the Ball Diamond). They noted some new muddy handprints around the “Camel” and large column in the Formation Passage, but the crew had no brushes with them to clean the formations with. |
