Springfield Plateau Grotto
Caving Trips
June 2007

June began with a 3-day restoration trip on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd to Fisher Cave in Meramec State Park.  Jon Beard, Jason Hardinger, Kasi Johnson, Ron Kittle and friends Fred and Rachel Burk, Gabe Rodgers, Jack Rosenkoetter and brother Jim plus Paul Hummel of MMV and Scott Steiner of Illinois continued the restoration project in the Ballroom of the cave.  On Saturday night, some of the group had an informal photo trip into the cave.  One of the highlights of restoration was the reattachment of a four-piece stalactite 15 feet above the floor of the cave.  It was nerve-wracking (it’s amazing what a person can do despite trembling hands!), but oh so satisfying to see a stalactite in its original place for the first time in many decades!

On June 3rd, Roy Gold and Bob Taylor visited Rattlesnake Cave of Christian County, and Eric and Charity Hertzler took the kids to visit Talking Rocks Cavern in Stone County.

On the 6th, Dr. Doug Gouzie visited Kartchner Caverns in southeast Arizona, a state-owned cave that has been well-documented the past few years because of its spectacular speleothems.

Bob Taylor was assisted by Jon Beard in mapping a 200-foot section of the entrance passage in Lowell Cave in Wright County.  White Bob sketched on this June 10th trip, Jon took photos of septarian flowstone and used a brush to remove some spray paint arrows and etched flowstone graffiti.

On the 12th, Jack Rosenkoetter and grandson Noah, and Bob Taylor and his son Matthew, visited Crystal Caverns in Barry County.

Jon Beard led a group from the Cedars Camp (based in Manchester, MO that has a camp near Lebanon, MO) in an educational tour through the Main Room and North Loop of Breakdown Cave in Christian County.  The next day, Jon, Jason Hardinger, Kasi Johnson, Gabe Rodgers, Jack Rosenkoetter, Bob Taylor and Charley Young led the group from the Cedars Camp to Ash Grove Cave in Greene County.  The purposes of the trip were to continue mapping of the cave and remove graffiti.  Normally the cave is dry, but with recent rain storms the main passage was deeply ponded.  The area to be mapped was cut off by a sump, so the group spent the day removing trash and graffiti and cleaning two muddied giant stalagmites while taking lots of pictures.

Lastly, on the 30th, Jon Beard, Rhiannon Course, Roy Gold, Jason Hardinger and Bob Taylor began the survey of Zoo Cave in Taney County.  The front section of the cave was mapped by Bob Taylor and helpers while the others scouted the rest of the cave taking photos of some of the salamanders and speleothems in the dry cave.  The group also visited nearby Heusel Cave to see some its 40-foot high passages and taking pictures.
